Step beyond Yerevan and discover two of Armenia’s most fascinating landmarks on an unforgettable Garni and Geghard tour. This cultural journey takes you from the magnificent pagan Temple of Garni to the mysterious rock-cut chambers of Geghard Monastery, followed by a delicious introduction to one of Armenia’s most beloved culinary traditions.
Garni Temple - A Glimpse into Ancient Armenia
Our first stop is the spectacular Temple of Garni, one of the most remarkable monuments of pre-Christian Armenia and the only surviving pagan temple of its kind in the country.
Located approximately 28 kilometers from Yerevan, the temple stands dramatically above the picturesque Azat River Gorge, surrounded by rugged cliffs and beautiful Armenian landscapes.
Built in the 1st century AD during the reign of King Tiridates I, the temple was dedicated to Mithra, the ancient god of the sun. Its elegant classical columns and distinctive Hellenistic architecture create a striking contrast with the surrounding Armenian mountains.
Unlike many pre-Christian monuments, Garni survived the adoption of Christianity and later became a summer residence of Armenian royalty.
Although a devastating earthquake in 1679 destroyed much of the temple, extensive restoration work began in the 1960s and brought this extraordinary monument back to life.
Today, the Garni complex offers much more than the temple itself. Explore the remains of the ancient fortress, discover the ruins of the royal palace and admire the beautifully preserved mosaics of the royal baths.
Walking among these ancient stones, you can almost imagine the royal court that once occupied this dramatic hilltop overlooking the Azat Gorge.
Geghard Monastery - Carved into the Rock
From Garni, we continue to Geghard Monastery, located just a short drive away in the spectacular landscape of Armenia’s Kotayk Province.
Surrounded by towering cliffs, Geghard is one of the most atmospheric monasteries in Armenia. The complex was developed during the medieval period, with much of its present form dating from the 12th–13th centuries.
Originally known as Ayrivank, meaning “Cave Monastery,” the monastery later became known as Geghard, meaning “Spear.” According to tradition, the name refers to the Holy Lance associated with the Passion of Christ, which was believed to have been kept here.
What makes Geghard truly special is its unique architecture. Several of its churches and chambers were carved directly into the surrounding rock, creating a fascinating combination of natural stone and medieval craftsmanship.
As you explore the complex, you will discover ancient chapels, rock-cut rooms and peaceful courtyards surrounded by dramatic cliffs. The atmosphere is both mysterious and serene, making Geghard one of the most memorable cultural experiences in Armenia.

We will visit a local venue for a hands-on Armenian lavash baking master class.
Learn how this famous thin flatbread is traditionally prepared, try your hand at baking it and discover the cultural traditions surrounding Armenian bread-making.
This is more than just a cooking experience - it is an opportunity to meet local traditions through food, share a memorable moment and taste freshly baked Armenian lavash.
By the end of the day, you will have experienced three different sides of Armenia: ancient history, breathtaking landscapes and living culinary traditions.
