Days: Every Tuesday and Friday
Departure Time: 09:00 AM from Tbilisi
Duration: Full Day
Discover Georgia’s ancient history and cultural landmarks on this fascinating day tour to Gori, Uplistsikhe, and the impressive Chronicle of Georgia monument.
Gori – The Birthplace of Stalin
We begin in Gori, the hometown of Joseph Stalin. One of the city's main attractions is the Stalin Museum, housed in a grand Gothic-style building constructed in the 1950s. The museum stands next to Stalin’s original birthplace – a small brick house where he was born in 1879.
Inside the museum, you’ll find personal artifacts, photographs, letters, and even Stalin’s childhood poems. A separate hall displays gifts sent to Stalin from around the world. One of the main highlights is Stalin’s personal armored train carriage, preserved with luxurious interiors of the era – including carved wood furniture, Venetian mirrors, a private office, bathroom, and guard compartment.
Uplistsikhe – The Ancient Cave City
Next, we visit Uplistsikhe, which translates to “Fortress of the Lord.” This remarkable city carved into rock is one of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus, with history dating back to the early Iron Age.
Located just 10 km from Gori, Uplistsikhe once served as a major political and religious center. It features rock-cut streets, temples, chambers, wine cellars, and even a secret tunnel leading to the river. The site is now preserved as an open-air museum and part of the Uplistsikhe Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve.
The surrounding area is rich in archaeological sites from the Bronze Age, including remnants of the Kura–Araxes culture, one of the earliest civilizations in the region.
Chronicle of Georgia – The Georgian Stonehenge
We end the day with a visit to the Chronicle of Georgia, a monumental complex located on Mount Keeni near the Tbilisi Sea. Often called the “Georgian Stonehenge”, this site is dedicated to the country’s history and the role of Christianity in shaping the nation.Designed by renowned Georgian artist and sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, the massive columns depict scenes from Georgian history, kings, and biblical stories. From the top, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Tbilisi Sea and surrounding landscapes – an ideal place to relax and take in the sunset.
