Echmiadzin, Ripsime, Gayane & Zvartnots Day Tour
Programm:
This day tour is a journey into the spiritual heart of Armenia - the Mother See of the Armenian Apostolic Church, its ancient churches, and one of the most remarkable ruined temples of the medieval world.
Mother Cathedral of St. Echmiadzin
Founded at the beginning of the 4th century, Echmiadzin Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the world.
- Origin legend: the cathedral is said to stand where Gregory the Illuminator saw a vision of Jesus Christ descending to earth in a dream.
- Interior frescoes: painted by members of the Hovnatanyan family, covering the church's interior.
- Seat of the Church: Echmiadzin is the center of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians, whose residence and the Theological Academy stand nearby.
Treasures of Echmiadzin Museum
Located in the cathedral's southeast section, the museum houses unique relics and religious art.
- The Holy Lance (Geghard): said to have pierced the side of Christ, kept in a silver reliquary.
- Relics of Noah's Ark: held in a reliquary crafted in 1698. Legend holds that the relic was given to Patriarch St. Hakob of Mtsbna in the 4th century after an angel placed it under his head as he slept on Mount Ararat, instructing him to take it down from the mountain.
- Archaeological finds: remnants of the original Holy Altar founded by St. Gregory the Illuminator, dating to 301–303 AD, uncovered during renovation work.
Church of St. Hripsime
Standing just before the city of Echmiadzin, this church honors the martyr Hripsime, whose grave lies in the crypt beneath the altar. She was killed for spreading Christianity in Armenia and refusing to marry King Tiridates III. Catholicos Komitas built a temple on the site of her death in the 7th century, as recorded in an inscription on the temple's western exterior wall - a classic example of cruciform, centrally-domed Armenian church architecture.
Church of St. Gayane
South of the cathedral stands Gayane Church, dedicated to the martyr Gayane, mentor and friend of Hripsime, who died alongside her for the same cause. Founded in 630 by Catholicos Ezr, the domed basilica was restored in 1652, with a western gallery later added as a burial place for hierarchs of the Armenian Church. The relics of St. Gayane rest in the southern aisle near the altar apse.
Zvartnots Temple
A striking feat of 7th-century Armenian architecture and engineering, Zvartnots stood on a complex multi-column structure until its collapse in the 10th century.
- Rediscovery: excavated in the early 20th century, its reconstruction - proposed by architect Toros Toramanian - was initially met with skepticism given the temple's scale and complexity for its era.
- Unexpected confirmation: a bas-relief at Sainte-Chapelle in Paris, depicting the Zvartnots temple alongside Noah's Ark, closely matched Toramanian's model, lending strong support to his reconstruction.
This Armenia day tour is a must for travelers interested in religious history and architecture, and pairs well with other Caucasus multi-country tours for those exploring Georgia and Armenia together with a trusted DMC.
