Programm:
Truso Valley Hike — Land of Lost Villages and Mineral Marvels
Walk through ancient history and surreal landscapes beneath the peaks of Kazbegi
Truso Valley (also known as Truso Gorge) is a breathtaking high-altitude valley in northeastern Georgia, located in the Kazbegi Municipality (historic Khevi), within Kazbegi National Park. It marks the origin of the Terek (Tergi) River, flowing between the Greater Caucasus and Khokh Ranges, near the border with North Ossetia.
This peaceful yet otherworldly valley offers an unforgettable combination of natural beauty, geological phenomena, and historic ruins—making it a dream destination for hikers, photographers, and explorers.
Highlights — What Makes Truso Special
- Mineral Wonders
Explore vivid travertine terraces and naturally carbonated lakes. The Abano Mineral Lake, with its bubbling surface and bright orange-white colors, is a surreal highlight. - Ancient Settlements & Fortresses
Walk among medieval towers and ghost villages like Resi, Ketrisi, and Abano. The majestic Zakagori Fortress, near the South Ossetian boundary, offers stunning views and haunting history. - Geopolitical Frontier
The valley borders South Ossetia. While safe to visit, hikers should carry a passport and remain cautious not to approach or cross into restricted areas. Occasional border patrols may be present near Zakagori.
Best Time to Visit:
Late May to September — Trails are clear of snow, mineral formations are most vivid, and days are longer and warmer.
Difficulty Level:
Easy to moderate — Mostly along dirt and gravel roads. Altitude (~2,200–2,400 m) adds mild challenge but is manageable for most.
