Leave Tbilisi behind and head north into the Greater Caucasus. This day tour follows the Georgian Military Highway past a mountain reservoir, a medieval fortress and a high-altitude ski resort. It ends in Stepantsminda, at the foot of Mount Kazbek, where you ride up by 4WD to the famous Gergeti Trinity Church.

Meeting Point and Departure

Meet your guide and start the journey north towards the mountains.

Zhinvali Dam Reservoir

This artificial lake was formed by a dam on the Aragvi River in the 1980s. It is surrounded by lush green mountains and makes a peaceful photo stop.

Ananuri Fortress Complex

This beautifully preserved medieval fortress overlooks the Zhinvali Reservoir. The complex includes:

  • Three churches
  • A bell tower
  • Fortress walls with carvings

Ananuri was added to UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List in 2007.

Gudauri Ski Resort

Gudauri lies at 2,200 meters above sea level and offers panoramic views of the Caucasus Mountains. Even outside the ski season, it is a good place for fresh air, short hikes and photos.

Friendship Monument / Treaty of Georgievsk

This Soviet-era viewpoint was built in 1983. The massive circular stone structure is decorated with mosaic murals and gives 360-degree views of the mountains and the deep gorge below.

Stepantsminda & Mount Kazbek

Arrive in the alpine town of Stepantsminda, at the foot of Mount Kazbek (5,033 m). From here you will visit:

  • Gergeti Trinity Church, a 14th-century architectural masterpiece on a hilltop above Stepantsminda. It is reached by 4WD, which is included in the tour.
  • Panoramic views of Mount Kazbek.
  • One of the most photographed sites in Georgia.

Return to Tbilisi

After your time in the mountains, you will travel back to Tbilisi.
