Megalithic Shaori Fortress(1Day Tour)

Megalithic Shaori Fortress(1Day Tour)

Programm:

Shaori Fortress Hike – The “Georgian Stonehenge”

Explore a mysterious Bronze Age megalith high in the Caucasus

Shaori, located in the Tsalka region of southern Georgia, typically refers to the Shaori Fortress — an ancient megalithic site perched atop the Tsalka Plateau at 2,752 meters above sea level. This cyclopean fortress, dating back to the Bronze Age, is built from massive basalt blocks arranged in rhomboid layouts. It features narrow gates and circular chambers, and is believed to have served religious or astronomical purposes, rather than a purely defensive role.

Nicknamed the "Georgian Stonehenge," Shaori offers a one-of-a-kind hiking experience with panoramic views of Lake Paravani and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains — ideal for those who seek both history and solitude in nature.

Tour Program

07:00 — Early Departure from Tbilisi
We leave Tbilisi early to ensure we complete the route in good daylight. A coffee and snack break will be provided along the way.

10:40–14:00 — Arrival at Tambovka Village & Ascent to Shaori Fortress

  • Short briefing, preparation of equipment, packing of backpacks
  • Begin the hike along traditional shepherds’ trails
  • Pass by abandoned summer camps, clear mountain streams, and alpine meadows
  • As we ascend, panoramic views open up — Lake Paravani and the Abul-Samsara Ridge appear on the horizon
  • At the summit, we reach the enigmatic ruins of the fortress: giant basalt stones forming powerful dry-stone walls, circular chambers, and a narrow entrance. Believed to date back to the 1st millennium BC, this site holds the secrets of ancient rituals and mountain life.

14:30–15:30 — Lunch Picnic at the Top
We cook a warm meal on a portable burner, enjoy sweets and tea from a thermos, and relax on the sun-warmed rocks. It’s a time to rest, take photos, and enjoy the atmosphere.

16:45–18:00 — Descent
We follow the same trail back down the slope. On the way, we may encounter sheep pastures, local shepherds, and possibly catch sight of birds of prey soaring overhead.
