Mtskheta Day Trip from Tbilisi - Journey Through Georgia’s Ancient Capital
Step back in time and discover Mtskheta, the ancient capital and spiritual heart of Georgia, on a fascinating day trip from Tbilisi. Just a short drive from the capital, this historic city is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and is home to some of Georgia’s most treasured religious monuments.
Your Mtskheta day tour from Tbilisi begins at 10:00 AM, taking you on a journey through centuries of Georgian history, legends and traditions.
Jvari Monastery - A Cross Above the Ancient Capital
Our first stop is the spectacular Jvari Monastery, dramatically perched on a hilltop above Mtskheta. From here, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views over the ancient city and the meeting point of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers.
Built in the 6th century, Jvari is closely connected with Saint Nino, who is traditionally believed to have erected a wooden cross on this very hill after introducing Christianity to the Kingdom of Iberia.
The combination of ancient stone architecture, dramatic mountain scenery and centuries-old legends makes Jvari one of the most memorable places to visit near Tbilisi.
Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - The Spiritual Heart of Georgia
We then continue to the magnificent Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, the centerpiece of historic Mtskheta and one of the most important religious monuments in Georgia.
Built in the 11th century, the cathedral is surrounded by legends and sacred traditions. According to Georgian tradition, the site is connected with the burial of Christ’s robe and has served as the final resting place of numerous Georgian kings.
Step inside and admire the impressive stone architecture, ancient frescoes and peaceful atmosphere of this extraordinary place of worship.
Samtavro Monastery - Where History and Faith Meet
Our final stop in Mtskheta is Samtavro Monastery, another important landmark deeply connected with Georgia’s Christian history.
The monastery complex includes the main church, the Church of Saint Nino, a historic bell tower and ancient defensive walls. Saint Nino is believed to have lived here, while King Mirian and Queen Nana, traditionally regarded as Georgia’s first Christian monarchs, are buried at the monastery.
As you walk through the peaceful grounds, you can feel the layers of history that have shaped Georgia for more than 1,500 years.
