Megalithic Shaori Fortress(1Day Tour)

Megalithic Shaori Fortress(1Day Tour)

Programm:

Shaori Fortress Hike - The “Georgian Stonehenge”
Explore a Mysterious Bronze Age Megalith High in the Caucasus
Ancient stones, endless mountain views, and the silence of the Tsalka Plateau

Step into the mysterious world of ancient Georgia on a full-day hiking adventure to Shaori Fortress, one of the most fascinating megalithic sites in the country's highlands.

Located in the Tsalka region of southern Georgia, Shaori Fortress stands at an impressive altitude of approximately 2,752 meters above sea level, on the vast Tsalka Plateau.

This ancient cyclopean megalithic complex, believed to date back to the Bronze Age, was constructed from enormous basalt blocks carefully arranged into distinctive rhomboid structures. Narrow entrances, circular chambers, and massive dry-stone walls create an atmosphere of mystery that has fascinated researchers and travelers alike.

Sometimes called the “Georgian Stonehenge,” Shaori is thought to have had religious, ceremonial, or possibly astronomical significance rather than serving purely as a defensive fortress.

Surrounded by vast volcanic landscapes, the site offers spectacular views toward Lake Paravani, the Abul-Samsari Range, and the Lesser Caucasus Mountains.

This hike is ideal for travelers who want to combine ancient history, archaeology, adventure, and solitude in nature.

Why Shaori Is Special
An Ancient Megalithic Mystery

Shaori is one of the most intriguing prehistoric sites in the Georgian highlands.

The fortress is built from enormous locally sourced basalt stones, forming powerful dry-stone walls, narrow entrances, and unusual circular chambers.

The exact purpose of the complex remains uncertain. Its unusual architecture has led researchers to suggest that the site may have been connected to ancient religious ceremonies, astronomical observations, or other ritual practices.

Standing among these enormous stones at almost 2,800 meters above sea level creates a unique feeling of connection with Georgia's distant past.

“The Georgian Stonehenge”

Because of its monumental stone architecture and possible astronomical or ceremonial significance, Shaori is sometimes referred to as “Georgia's Stonehenge.”

Unlike the famous monument in England, however, Shaori remains remote and relatively untouched by mass tourism.

There are no crowds, souvenir shops, or busy tourist facilities here - only ancient stones, open mountain landscapes, and the silence of the highlands.

Panoramic Mountain Landscapes

The hike itself is part of the experience.

The route follows traditional shepherd trails across the Tsalka Plateau, passing alpine meadows, mountain streams, abandoned seasonal settlements, and wide-open volcanic landscapes.

As you climb higher, panoramic views gradually open toward Lake Paravani and the Abul-Samsari Range.

At the summit, the ancient fortress stands against an extraordinary mountain backdrop, making Shaori a spectacular destination for both hikers and photographers.

Tour Program

07:00 - Early Departure from Tbilisi

Our adventure begins with an early morning departure from Tbilisi.

We start early to make the most of the daylight and allow plenty of time for the mountain hike.

A coffee and light snack break will be provided along the way.

As we leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes from urban surroundings to the wide-open highlands of southern Georgia.

10:40-14:00 - Arrival at Tambovka Village & Ascent to Shaori Fortress

Arrive at the remote mountain village of Tambovka, where we prepare for the hike.

After a short safety briefing and equipment check, we pack our backpacks and begin the ascent.

The route follows traditional shepherds' trails through the open landscapes of the Tsalka Plateau.

Along the way, we pass:

Abandoned summer settlements
Clear mountain streams
Alpine meadows
Volcanic landscapes
Remote grazing areas

As we gradually gain altitude, the views become wider and more spectacular.

Lake Paravani appears on the horizon, while the dramatic peaks of the Abul-Samsari Range stretch across the landscape.

Shaori Fortress

At the summit, we reach the enigmatic ruins of Shaori Fortress.

Massive basalt blocks form impressive dry-stone walls, narrow entrances, and unusual circular chambers.

The site is believed to date back to the 1st millennium BC, although its exact history and original purpose remain subjects of archaeological discussion.

Take time to explore the ancient structures, photograph the massive stones, and imagine what life and rituals may have looked like here thousands of years ago.

Surrounded by mountains and almost complete silence, Shaori offers a rare opportunity to experience one of Georgia's ancient archaeological mysteries in its natural setting.

14:30-15:30 - Picnic Lunch at the Top

After exploring the fortress, enjoy a well-deserved lunch at the summit.

We prepare a warm meal on a portable burner and serve it with sweets and hot tea from a thermos.

Relax on the sun-warmed rocks, enjoy the panoramic views, take photographs, and simply absorb the peaceful atmosphere of the highlands.

This is the perfect moment to rest before beginning the descent.

16:45-18:00 - Descent

Begin the descent along the same mountain trail.

As we make our way down, enjoy a different perspective of the surrounding landscape.

The route passes through alpine meadows and grazing areas where you may encounter sheep and local shepherds.

Keep an eye on the sky - depending on the season and weather, you may also spot eagles, falcons, or other birds of prey soaring above the mountains.

18:00-18:30 - Short Break Before Departure

Reach the foot of the trail and take a short break before the return journey.

Relax, refresh yourself, enjoy a coffee, and prepare for the drive back to Tbilisi.

19:00-19:30 - Return to Transport & Drive Back to Tbilisi

Meet the transport and begin the journey back to Tbilisi.

The drive takes approximately 3 hours, giving you plenty of time to relax after the hike and enjoy the changing landscapes along the way.

22:00-23:00 - Arrival in Tbilisi

Arrive back in Tbilisi after a memorable day of hiking, archaeology, and exploration in the remote highlands of Southern Georgia.
